Most of us suffer from cold hands and feet when we are exposed to cold environments, but more than 0% of the population will suffer more and will be diagnosed with Raynaud’s.  Their hands and feet turn white and blue in the cold.  This occurs when the blood vessels narrow and blood cannot get to the surface of the skin.  And once the blood flow returns, the skin turns red, throbs, tingles, burns, or feels numb.

There are two types of Raynaud’s – Primary and Secondary.

Primary Raynaud’s happens on its own and the cause is unknown. It can be caused by cold temperatures or stress.

Secondary Raynaud’s is caused by injuries, other diseases, or certain medicines.  These other diseases include Lupus, Sjorgen’s syndrome, Scleroderma, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

People in colder climates are more likely to develop Raynaud’s. It is also more common in women over the age of 30 and people with a family history.

There are many ways to prevent or alleviate the symptoms of Raynaud’s such as:

An interesting and simple treatment for Raynaud’s was developed by Dr. Murray Hamlet at the Army’s Research Institute of Environmental Medicine and numerous studies have validated this treatment to be effective and long-lasting (Jobe 1982, 1985).  To perform this treatment, sit in a warm room with the hands or feet in warm water for 5 minutes.  And then go outside in the cold wearing light clothing with the hands or feet in warm water for 5 minutes.  Repeat 5 times a day for 10 days.  This procedure retrains the blood vessels to open up instead of narrow when exposed to the cold environment.
